Finalis Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards 2003

Jazz Journalist Association Awards 2003, penghargaan yang setiap tahun rutin diadakan oleh organisasi Jazz Journalists Association telah menentukan para finalisnya dari kategori-kategori yang telah ditentukan. Finalis ini dipilih dari pemilihan yang dilakukan oleh 90 anggota Jazz Journalists Association.

Ada beberapa hal yang menarik dari daftar para finalis diantaranya adalah masuknya pemenang Grammy Awards Norah Jones dalam kategori “Up ‘n’ coming Musician of The Year” bersaing dengan para musisi jazz muda yang memang sedang naik daun seperti pianis Jason Moran, drumer/percusionist John Hollenbeck dan pianis Vijay Iyer.

Selain itu adalah yang menarik dicermati adalah persiangan antara para musisi jazz muda dan para musisi jazz senior, misalnya pada kategori “Jazz Composer of the Year”, para komposer jazz muda seperti Dave Douglas dan Maria Schneider bersaing dengan senior mereka seperti Andrew Hill dan Wayne Shorter, juga di “Jazz Pianis of The Year” dimana pemain muda Brad Mehldau dan Jason Moran bersaing dengan seniornya yaiyu Keith jarrett dan Kenny Baron, hal ini juga terjadi di kategori-kategori lainnya. Hal ini menunjukan dalam kancah musik jazz para pemain senior atau generasi tua masih eksis dan diakui kepiawaiannya sedangkan regenarasi dari musisi-musisi jazz muda sudah bisa menyamai kemampuan dari para senior mereka, tinggal kita lihat saja hasilnya apakah para musisi muda ini bisa menggeser dominasi para senior mereka, kita tunggu saja hasil pemenangnya yang akan diumumkan tanggal 17 Juni 2003 di B. B. King’s Blues Club and Grill, 245 W. 42nd St, USA.
